Been a while since my last entry. So much has gone on in the world, it really is hard to express. The World Trade Center destruction was last Tuesday. No one I know was in the building, the current tally is over 6400 missing. Now Americans are bracing themselves for a war with Afghanistan. It’s probably pretty idiotic to try and get into a war with terrorist factions. There’s only so much that you can really do. It’ll be like Vietnam, except worse. It really is a war we won’t want to fight. I am generally opposed to war, but this one sees particularly to win. How do you define winning in a war against terrorists?
We’re going to see a lot of fallout from the attack, everywhere our civil liberties will be under attack and I’m scared of that. It’ll all be in the name of security and safety, which are nice in theory, but no one will ever be truly safe. I don’t mind increasing airport security some, things like better paid, better trained airport security seem reasonable to me. But things like air marshals on every flight are just too much. They will skyrocket the cost of airline travel and won’t really make us feel safer. To me, I’ll feel less safe and more paranoid. We are bracing ourselves for a war against an enemy we don’t even know, in a battle we won’t be able to determine a winner, for a length of time which we can’t predict. That’s a recipie for disaster in my book. Certainly there are some good aspects to waging a war on terrorism. Drawing international support together against terrorists seems like a good idea, but a full scale invasion is doomed to failure. Of course what do I know? It’s going to be a war of information, which few large organizations are well equipped to handle.
I certainly feel for the victims, but I can’t really support an invasion of Afghanistan at all.
On a more positive note, the tragedy of the bombings has brought forth an outpouring of nationalism and support for disaster relief and civic service organizations, most notably, the American Red Cross and the NY police and fire departments. This of course is a good thing, and this does make me proud to be an american.
Other than that, not much is interesting in these parts. football season has started again and I’m in another yahoo league, baseball season is almost over and the Mariners have a chance to finish a season with the best record ever. Though they need to win about 10/14 now to do it I think.
Work is going fine, not too much interesting going on there.
Tracy is good.
