There was just something about this article from The Onion about Leave a Comment

I love my Tivo, but this is an funny article about what your tivo thinks of you.

On IRC we have revived the tradtion of perl golf. Where given a simple problem, you find the way to do it in perl with the fewest keystrokes for instance, yesterday’s problem was to print out all the even numbers between 100 and 1 in descending order. And our solution was:

perl -e 'map{$_%2||print "$_ "}reverse(1..100)'

Which is pretty clean and efficient. The official perl golf site is at http://perlgolf.sourceforge.net. It feels good to provide neat little solutions to things like these.

Hmm.. It’s surprising how much a day and some lube can make. On Saturday I averaged 14.8 mph on the bike, but on Sunday on the same course I averaged 16.8 on the same course, but only about 2 miles longer. The only change I made was that I lubed my chain, and tweaked my rear brake. I might have been rubbing that brake on the wheel on saturday without me knowing it though. I am hoping to be able to complete the bike in 3:15, which means I’d have to average 17.2 mph. If I can do the swim and bike in under 4 hours, then I should be in good shape to make the 6 hour time that I want. If I can’t finish the first two legs in 4:30, then I’d have to do a 1:30 run, which won’t happen. The best run that I can hope for is about a 1:45, and I would call that very good. More realistic is about a 2:00+ run.

In an distressing series of events, I now officially suck at war3. It’s unclear exactly how this has happened, but I can’t even beat mediocre players anymore with random team or arranged teams. Ah well. Maybe I’ll just lay off of it until they bring out an expansion. I was hoping that they’d release Star Wars Galaxies this year, but it seems highly doubtful that it will happen.

I’m looking at some super expensive triathlon bikes. They are nice, but it’s hard to justify their prices. Some are $3-4k+. But hey, if it shaves off 2 seconds from my triathlon time, it’s gotta be worth it right?

Tracy has a chance to bring some business to her firm, she’d get a bonus for that. That would be sweet. Every time she does something good, I am pretty sure she is going to make partner.

I am using gaim, and it was pretty stable until this week, now it’s crashing all the time, stupid piece of shit. Also I am using bogofilter and I’m very pleased with how well its filtering my mail.

I’ve been playing the demo for Tom Clancy’s Raven Shield. It’s pretty good, about as good as America’s Army, but it doesn’t crash as much. A worthy successor to the Rainbow Six line of games.

Also my friend ronsega is proud of his “you are an idiot” site. It spawns a ton of popups and is really really annoying so do not click through unless you want to reboot or at least shut down your browser. it’s at http://cyclone.mospeada.net.

Last week I got a wetsuit and so today I did my first open water swim. It was an interesting experience. The water was pretty cold, but with the wetsuit, it was not any worse than jumping in a pool. I probably swallowed more saltwater than i should’ve, but nothing too major. As expected, Kojo swam much better than I. I expect him to have at least a 5 minute lead out of the water. Hopefully I can make up a bit in the transition, and not lose too much in the bike and then make time in the run. I need to get some more open water experience, it was actually kind of fun.

Tracy got her own web page on the home page of her firm. Isn’t that special?

And I had two flat tires on my bike this morning. That sucked. The first wasn’t a problem because I was right near home, so I just went and changed it, then restarted my ride, but the second one came when I was 3 miles from home. A guy named Leslie was nice enough to stop and try and help, but he blew his only spare tube on me only to discover that my tire had a ripped sidewall that had caused both flats. He said he owned Burlingame’s Summit Bicycles so I’ll be sure to buy some stuff from them. I guess if you count his blown spare tube, it was 3 flats. After that, he tried to put a patch on my flat and the tire sidewall and fill it, but that patch failed to stick. So he wasted a tube and a couple of CO2 cartridges on me without success. I feel bad about it, so I’ll buy some extra stuff from Summit bikes this weekend and send him a nice mail or something.

My friend Brig is going to have surgery today. Good luck to her, it seems pretty routine and should only require an overnight stay, but never hurts to wish her well and think good thoughts.

Blizzard has changed their War3 player statistics pages and now they have tons of interesting info. You can take a look at my war3 profile. I learned a couple of things, people had said my orc kinda sucked. It turns out they were right. My win rate with orc is only %60 instead of the %65+ that I get with other races. Also my Night Elf play isn’t that impressive either. Also I really dominate short games, but have trouble in the longer ones. There might be some sort of non-obvious reasons there, but I haven’t figured them out.
