So I’m sitting at home in Seattle and it’s pretty damn boring. Good thing I sleep better when I’m not in my own bed. I’m not sure why, but I can only get about 7 hours of sleep at home, but I can get 9+ when I’m away. It’s weird.
Me and my parents all play quite a bit of freecell, which is the most popular computer game in the world I’m told. I notice that the game on Windows ME allows you to select a random game between 1-32000. This is extremely far from being a randomly shuffled deck. Many Many orders of magnitude short, depending on the implementation. Speaking of games, emetri has been raving about PlanetSide so I have signed up for the beta and hopefully I’ll get to try it out. My question is, with the advent of the monthly fee for Massively Multiplayer games, how many of those games can the average gamer buy and keep playing, 1? 2? 3? It can’t be more than that. at an average of about $12-$15/month, that becomes pretty steep if you subscribe to 3. What this means is that only a few MM games will dominate. Planetside shows promise because it’s not really like all the other MM games, because it’s a FPS and not an RPG like almost every other MM game.. But in the MMORPG genre, besides EQ, there will be Star Wars Galaxies, probably World of Warcraft and maybe only one or two more to hold gamers. It’s bad news for the huge number of MMORPGs in development by second tier development/marketing companies.
