I’ve been super busy at work, so I haven’t been doing much besides work.
Here’s the official results from San Jose for our age group(Kojo is now an old man in the 30-34 like me). There were 140 people in our age group.
Hubert Kojo

Men's rank 400 169
Age 32 30
A/G swim rank 89 40
Swim time 27:54.0 23:17.8
Swim kph 2.69 3.22
T1 2:52.7 3:33.2
A/G bike rank 51 20

Overall time 2:33:15.1 2:20:01.6
My bike time this year was almost as fast as Kojo’s last year. Though this year was a little bit less windy. My plan is to make the next triathlon one big transition. That’s how I am going to win.

Well today was the San Jose Triathlon. It went well. I beat my time from last year by 4 minutes, mostly on the strength of a bike that was 4 minutes faster than last year. I lost about 2 minutes from last year on the run, but I made up for it in the swim and in transition. I switched to going sockless so that saves a few seconds.
I think I figured out what the key for me in the swim. I need to just relax. The swim felt easy, because I wasn’t pushing myself and I was relaxed. Several other triathlons I’ve tried to go out strong and my stroke gets bad. It also helped that the waves of swimmers were small and the water was open, so it wasn’t very crowded, and I didn’t get hit or kicked hardly at all. Getting hit a lot really makes you swim nervously and that affects my stroke a lot I think.
I felt like I was riding really well. Very few people passed me while I was on the bike. Probably less than 10. A couple of those people just blew by me at an amazing speed. I averaged close to 22mph. The bike course rode better this year than last. The wind was very light, while last year it was moderate. While I was on the bike, there was a guy in a car sitting there stuck in traffic, who gave me the finger for no reason other than the fact that I was one of many triathletes that caused him to be delayed. Whatever. I had a bit of a right calf cramp, but it didn’t develop into anything debilitating.
The run was a bit unfortunate. It wasn’t terrible, but I survived it. The first mile I felt awful. I thought I was going to barf, but after another mile I got over it and it wasn’t too bad, but not a particularly impressive time for me. I wish I had the natural running ability that some people do.
I don’t have the official results handy, but I’ll post them tomorrow.
I really love this event, it’s probably my favorite. It’s a super fast course and the start, finish and transition areas are laid out nicely.

This weekend is the San Jose International Triathlon. I’ve only got one more full race this year after this so I’m hoping to do well. With my new bike I should beat my old bike time and if I can have a comparable run and swim I should be in good shape. But I don’t really feel that great. I’ve got a light week of workouts until the race on Sunday so hopefully I’ll be feeling a bit stronger by the end of the week.
I got my taxes done finally. Some day I won’t have to file an extension.
I’ve been doing some work with the Sleepycat database, aka Berkeley DB. It’s pretty interesting. They have a neat Collections framework around their Java stuff. But it’s got this really huge drawback. There’s the classic C/C++ native edition and then there’s the Java edition. The native edition and the Java editions do not have the same file format and are not highly compatible. There are two solutions. You can use the Java Native Interface(JNI) support to have a Java application talk to the native edition. Or you can do a Dump and Load to get the two versions to talk to each other. I’m kind of unhappy about this, but what can you do.

This is kind of a neat new nokia messaging system.
Work is going very well. I’m really happy with it. Other than that, not much is up. I’ve got the San Jose International Triathlon next week. Between work and working out, I don’t have time to really do anything else.
